OATS Procedure

Osteoarticular Transfer System (OATS) Procedure which involves treating knee cartilage that is missing or damaged by replacing it with healthy cartilage from a non-weight bearing portion of the joint. With time and proper exercises the implanted cartilage will grow into the damaged knee.

The OATS procedure is generally for individuals under 50 years of age and experiencing knee pain and swelling from cartilage damage or loss. Because of the nature of the procedure, damage sizing beyond 10mm to 20mm in diameter may not be a viable case for OATS.

What to expect

Following surgery, patients will have to keep the injured leg elevated and non weight bearing for for about 3-5 weeks. In order to ensure a successful results, patients should scrupulously follow exercise and physical therapy instructions. With proper instruction and guidance, the patient can return to high impact activities in as early as 10 months.
